On October 17, the UH Energy along with other departments at the 91视频 participated in Energy Day 2026, Houston鈥檚 largest free family festival showcasing exhibits focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Founded in 2011, Energy Day is hosted by the Consumer Energy Education Foundation (CEEF) and the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA).

The UH departments of Physics, Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering, STEM Center, and the Texas Center for Superconductivity connected with young students and their parents about exciting career opportunities in the energy industry through STEM education. UH Energy members also showcased newly developed video modules on potential energy careers to children and their parents.

鈥淚t is a much-anticipated occasion for UH Energy to connect with the greater Houston community and share with students the different ways energy is used and motivate them for a future in STEM and especially energy.鈥

 - Ramanan Krishnamoorti, Vice President, UH Energy

Activities at the event included:

  • Wind Energy: Interacting with wind energy through AirZooka and creating solar energy bracelets
  • Pedal Power: Hopping on a bike and watching how the rider鈥檚 energy can generate electricity.
  • Hydration vs. Reaction: Putting science to the test with an interactive experiment exploring hydration and reaction time.
  • Slime Lab: Getting hands-on with chemistry by mixing, stretching, and experimenting with slime.

Parents and schoolchildren of various ages participated in the activities, including first-timers who heard about the event from others, drawn by their interest in STEM.

鈥淚t's bigger and better than I thought it would be. There are a lot of neat booths, and they're already excited to explore everything,鈥 said Nikki Riley, a parent who brought her three children, aged 10, 8, and 5.

Another parent from Galveston shared that her daughter was invited to the event and was interested in solar energy. She said, 鈥淭his is important to broaden their horizons for the future. They need to open their minds, and this is a creative way to do it.鈥

Over the years, UH Energy has supported Energy Day as a great initiative to connect with the community and continue building interest in STEM and energy careers.
