Driving the Energy Transition: Episode 5

Title: Challenges of transitioning to renewable energy

by

Teaser (Joe): Today, we ask can fossil fuels be used without emitting carbon?

Open (Recorded Intro): This is UH Energy 鈥 Driving the Global Energy Transition.

Body:

When carbon-burning (do you mean fossil?) fuels are burned to release energy, carbon dioxide gas is produced that weighs about 250% more than the fuel itself. Capturing that amount would require a pressurized tank two and a half times larger than a car鈥檚 fuel tank! That is why we are investing in battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, which avoid on-board fossil carbon use, and why we鈥檙e exploring renewable sources of carbon in bio- or synthetic fuels for jumbo-jet use in large aircraft. In the future, fossil fuels could be reserved for large, stationary industrial plants where carbon can be captured and stored underground for thousands of years. Carbon capture and storage, or 鈥淐CS,鈥 can be used in combination with electricity, hydrogen, and renewable carbon fuels to help 鈥渄ecarbonize鈥 our economy.
