(This month's Dean's Corner features insights from Yarneccia D. Dyson, Dean and Professor,
Maconda Brown O'Connor Endowed Dean's Chair
of the Graduate College of Social Work.)
Where there are people, where there is a pulse and where policy shapes lives, there is a place for social work.
Social work is everywhere. From hospitals, schools and behavioral health settings to legislative chambers, nonprofit organizations and communities, social workers play an essential role in strengthening individuals, families, organizations and systems. The versatility of a social work degree creates extraordinary opportunities for professional practice, research, leadership, advocacy and systems transformation.
At the 91视频 Graduate College of Social Work, we are preparing the next generation of professionals to meet the evolving needs of our communities while helping shape the future of the social work workforce.
Preparing a Practice-Ready Workforce
At the heart of our success is an unwavering commitment to preparing students for leadership and service. Our educational model integrates academic rigor, experiential learning and meaningful community engagement to equip graduates with the knowledge, competencies and adaptability required in today's increasingly complex professional environments.
Our students have contributed more than 291,000 practicum hours across Greater Houston and beyond, translating classroom learning into direct engagement with individuals, families, organizations and communities. These experiences strengthen students' professional competencies while extending the college's impact through partnerships with agencies and organizations addressing critical social and health-related needs.
Our commitment to workforce readiness is also reflected in professional licensure outcomes. The college has consistently exceeded reported comparison pass rates for the state of Texas, the U.S. and Canada, and the relevant licensing jurisdiction on both the Licensed Master Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Social Worker examinations. Our LMSW licensure outcomes have also demonstrated continued improvement in recent years, reflecting our commitment to preparing graduates for professional practice.
These outcomes reflect our emphasis on academic preparation, professional competency and supporting graduates as they advance toward licensure and professional practice.
Social Work Is Essential to Health
As an integral partner within UH Health, the college brings a distinctive and indispensable perspective to advancing health, well-being and interdisciplinary workforce preparation.
Health is shaped by far more than medical treatment. Housing stability, food security, employment, education, transportation, social connections and access to health care are among the social drivers that influence health outcomes and quality of life.
Social workers understand how these factors intersect with individual circumstances, family systems, institutional practices and public policy. We connect clinical care with community resources, address behavioral and psychosocial needs, advocate for individuals and families, and contribute to systems-level solutions that advance health and well-being.
Through UH Health, we have an extraordinary opportunity to expand interprofessional education, collaborative research and workforce development alongside colleagues in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, optometry, psychology and other health disciplines. The college's contribution is particularly important in preparing professionals who recognize that effective health care must address both clinical needs and the broader conditions influencing people's lives.
Innovating for the Future of Social Work Education
Preparing tomorrow's workforce requires us to continuously examine not only what we teach, but how we prepare students to apply their knowledge in dynamic and evolving environments.
At the GCSW, we are exploring and advancing innovative approaches to professional education, including simulation-based learning, virtual reality, ethical applications of artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary training experiences. These opportunities can help students strengthen clinical judgment, communication, ethical decision-making and problem-solving skills within realistic learning environments.
Importantly, technology does not replace the human-centered foundation of social work. Rather, when thoughtfully integrated, it enhances our ability to prepare adaptable, compassionate and highly skilled professionals.
Charting Our Path to Excellence
Our strategic plan, Charting Our Path to Excellence, or COPE, serves as a living roadmap鈥攁ligning our priorities, strengthening our pillars of distinction, and positioning the GCSW to lead with innovation, relevance and purpose in an evolving social landscape.
Through COPE, we are advancing five interconnected priorities: student success and workforce readiness; faculty and staff success and culture; research and innovation; community partnerships and engagement; and enrollment growth and visibility.
These priorities reflect our commitment to building a college that is responsive to workforce needs, connected to communities, and recognized for educational excellence, innovation and meaningful social impact.
The Future of Social Work Starts Here
As societal challenges become increasingly complex, the need for well-prepared social work professionals continues to grow. Whether working directly with individuals and families, leading organizations, conducting research, influencing policy or collaborating across health disciplines, social workers are essential to building healthier, stronger and more resilient communities.
At the 91视频 Graduate College of Social Work, we are not simply preparing students to enter the workforce. We are preparing them to strengthen it, transform it and lead its future.
That is the promise of social work education. And that is how we are Charting Our Path to Excellence.
