MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPEAL OF RESEARCH REAPS REWARD FOR ARNOLD GULOY
Recognized worldwide for his pioneering research and creativity in the field of solid-state chemistry, Arnold M. Guloy, professor of chemistry, is well known for his breakthrough research into a first-time, low-density synthetic form of the chemical element germanium.Guloy is universally viewed by his colleagues as a well-rounded, multidisciplinary collaborator, which played a large part in his earning the Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award for the professor rank.
A supporter from Northwestern University wrote in a letter of support, “He publishes highly detailed, well-written papers eloquently describing results of broad scientific interest and placing them in a much greater context so they can be appreciated not only by chemists, but also by materials scientists and condensed matter physicists.
His nomination form echoes the sentiment, stating that “the broad-based nature of his research and the importance his materials have to real-world applications have generated considerable excitement in the solid-state chemistry, physics and materials science and engineering communities.
Three Awards for Excellence in Research and Scholarship are given each year to faculty who have achieved a substantial record of outstanding research, scholarship or creative activities in their field. Each award carries a $5,000 stipend and a plaque.
