McGovern Annual Award Lectureship in Family, Health and Human Values at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25 at the University of Houston Student Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public.
Cashin, a child of political activists during the civil rights era, will discuss the modern-day racial caste system in her lecture 鈥淭he Descendants: From Slavery to Jim Crow to Dark Ghettos, A Call for 21st Century Abolition.鈥
鈥淧rofessor Cashin is one of America鈥檚 most insightful voices on race, class and society,鈥 said Antonio D. Tillis, dean, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and M.D. Anderson Professor in Hispanic Studies. 鈥淗er nuanced, intellectually rigorous scholarship is a force for good in the fight to understand the complexities surrounding racial division and inequality.
